How can you sing like you speak?
Physiologically, the speaking voice and the singing voice are one instrument. We do not carry around a voice box labeled Use for Singing Only. Yet the prevailing psychology is that we need to physically change something in the vocal apparatus to sing.
When the Morganix Method™ becomes a part of your singing process it is just like speaking to a friend when you sing. You will be blown away at how simple and natural singing can be!
We speak on pitch in normal conversation. We also speak in rhythm - sometimes smooth and legato, sometimes pointed and staccato. The musical elements of speech define a distinct voice and personality. Pitch and rhythm specify the meaning of words and give them life. People recognize a speaking voice by its musical qualities.
As emerging research improves our understanding of the acoustics, mechanics and neurological function of the vocal apparatus, the rules of the speaking voice and singing voice blend into one. Speaking on pitch requires a crossover in the brain in order to speak (a left brain activity) on musical pitch (a right brain activity). Speaking with emotional inflection, as far as brain activity is concerned, is half way to singing. Practice helps the two lobes of the brain work together habitually to produce speech on musical pitch.
Theater music, pop, jazz and all other contemporary styles are speech-driven. Yes, we sing on the vowels, but we get paid for the consonants! I am sooo thankful that I had no vocal strain, pains in my throat, etc when recording my CD. Thank you so much for helping me through. I simply couldn't have done it without you!" —Helga Kaefer, singer/songwriter
Steps of The Morganix Method™ / Sing Like You Speak™ process:
- Meditative Breathing: Physical tension is audible in the voice. Meditative breathing calms the mind and body then switches focus from external to internal - where singing is mastered.
- Body Alignment: Many vocal challenges are a direct result of poor posture. Maintaining excellent alignment is one of the easiest ways to care for and simplify vocal training.
- Speaking on Pitch: Physiologically, the speaking voice and the singing voice are one instrument. No reason to create a difference! Speaking on pitch is not a step, but a concept used in all the steps.
- Opening Exercises: Opening exercises help discover how to open your instrument on inhale and keep the spaces open during phonation. The instrument must be open to function naturally. Open and calm allows the body to respond naturally to the stimuli that prompt vocalization.
- Candle Exercises: The candle exercise is a simple, productive exercise to de-mystify diaphragmatic breathing and to make it a habit. It is also used to train beginning consonants as a vehicle for forward release of breath and sound.
- Random Pitch Exercises : Random pitch exercises strip away the propping up of the larynx or bracing of muscles that can occur prior to creating sound. It eliminates the preconceived notion that you must physically adjust the instrument for each pitch by using unpredictable, random pitches. The result is simplicity of thought process and consistency of vocal response to pitch.
- Phrase Exercises: Phrase exercises are specifically composed as a bridge between vocal technique exercises and repertoire. They are mini pieces of music to develop singers' musical ear by tackling all the same challenges of a song - lyrics, non-stepwise movement of melodies, changing rhythms and challenging harmonic changes. The lyrics motivate and keep singer on task, such as "Spit my consonants! Spit, spit, spit!"
