Sally’s journey to Sing Like You Speak™

Every master begins as a disaster. I am no exception to that rule. I came out of the womb singing, loving music as the one thing that made me feel most alive.

I always had a ‘good voice’ but was not the best singer. There’s a difference. It seemed that others respected my ability more than I did and they asked me to help them with their singing. It was confusing/disappointing – guess I’m not going to make it as a singer – and exciting at the same time because I really love helping others get out there and perform their best.

I helped a friend in college prepare for his audition for ‘JC Superstar.’ With my teaching, he found a voice he never knew he had! I played for his audition and the director said that she’d never heard that voice out of him before and he gave me all the credit for his transformation. I felt empowered.

At that moment I learned 2 very important lessons. First of all is that I love, love, love to teach others how to sing and that I have an intuitive gift. The second lesson had to do with the director. She didn’t like it at all that I had helped my friend find his signature sound and in such a short time. Egos!

Let’s back up a bit. I began my study of the voice around age 15 – with a local opera singer. Historically, most singers rely on classical singers to teach them the ‘proper’ way of breathing and producing sound. I am not exception to that rule either.

Certainly most of my classical training was valuable. I have taken little bits from almost all of my teachers – even if it was a tip on what NOT to do. The last classical person I studied with was a brilliant teacher. I studied with her for 10 yrs and learned a lot. The frustration of knowing I had so much more voice to release remained.

The problem was that I am not a classical singer. I was writing my own music that was a mixture of jazz and Broadway styles - styles that are driven by rhythm and the lyrics. But how to express this still eluded me.

At a certain point in my studies with my last teacher, I realized that I was not improving, but actually loosing ground. I needed to communicate with my audience and swing the rhythm and express myself through the lyrics. My teacher was ‘fixing’ my approach to every note and every word as though she didn’t know what else to do with me. It got so I was afraid to make a sound that she wouldn’t approve. That’s not a mutually respectful teacher/client relationship.

Then I did the rounds of ‘non-classical’ vocal teachers. That was a complete disaster! The teachers didn’t know a thing about the voice – they just had a specific way of teaching that had worked for them years ago and made your voice a clone of theirs.

About this point, I decided if there was going to be a good vocal method for contemporary singers, I was going to have to write it. And that’s exactly what I did. Researched, studied and wrote for 2 years until I had a step-by-step process so others could follow my logic and then put the method into action.

Sing Like You Speak™: The Morganix Method is the result. It is unique and my students say, brilliant.

Sing Like You Speak™ is a technique based on the all the latest medical, acoustical, musical and therapeutic research plus a large does of practical sense. It is a method that satisfies the need to belt and to sing legit; keeps the voice healthy regardless of genre being sung; gets the self out of the way and allows the natural instrument to sound – so your signature sound comes through; that trains musical singers; a technique that uses all the good stuff from classical training and then goes further to serve the needs of contemporary singers.

Sing Like You Speak™: Morganix Method.

So you see, I was really searching for a method that would make me sing like a star as well as everyone I teach. I do feel like a star now. I do sing like a star – an aging Broadway star, but a star nonetheless. I’m comfortable on stage now and I’m sure down to my bones that Sing Like You Speak™ is the answer for contemporary singer training.
